An Experimental Study on the Influence of Passive Deformation to Lift and Thrust Generation in Flexible Flapping Wing

چکیده
The influence of deformation on aerodynamic characteristics is studied in this paper. To study the influences of deformation magnitude and range separately, a kind of twopart flapping wing model is designed, which separates the deformation magnitude and range, and makes the measurement of deformation easier. A series of wind-tunnel experiments are carried out to explore the influence. The experimental data shows that deformation has a certain effect on both lift and thrust generation, especially for thrust. The big difference is that the effect on thrust generation is positive, but on lift generation is negative. The wing with smaller deformation range gets more sensitive to deformation magnitude than the wing with larger deformation in thrust generation. This indicates the deformation of the part close to wing tip contributes more to thrust generation than other parts. The result indicates that a proper deformation, including deformation range and magnitude, is helpful to thrust generation but has to have a loss of lift generation.

Force production and asymmetric deformation of a flexible flapping wing in forward flight
Insect wings usually are flexible and deform significantly under the combined inertial and aerodynamic load. To study the effect of wing flexibility on both lift and thrust production in forward flight, a two-dimensional numerical simulation is employed to compute the fluid–structure interaction of an elastic wing section translating in an inclined stroke plane while pitching around its leading...

Research in the field of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FMAV) is an ongoing quest to master the natural flyers by mechanical means. The field is characterized by unsteady aerodynamics, whose knowledge is still developing. Birds and insects have different methods of producing lift and thrust for hovering and forward flight. Most birds, however, cannot hover. Wing tips of birds follow simple pa...

We report a comprehensive scaling law and novel lift generation mechanisms relevant to the aerodynamic functions of structural flexibility in insect flight. Using a Navier-Stokes equation solver, fully coupled to a structural dynamics solver, we consider the hovering motion of a wing of insect size, in which the dynamics of fluid-structure interaction leads to passive wing rotation. Lift genera...

In the present study, we have developed a smart flapping wing with a MFC (macro-fiber composites) actuator. To mimic the flying mechanisms of nature’s flyers such as birds or insects, the aerodynamic characteristics related to the birds and ornithopters are investigated. To measure the aerodynamic forces of flapping devices, a test stand consisting of two loadcells is manufactured, and the dyna...

A numerical framework is presented to simulate rigid and flexible flapping wings. The fluid-structure interaction is realized by coupling a Navier-Stokes solver to a geometrically nonlinear co-rotational structural solver. In the coupled fluid-structure interaction interface the aerodynamic loading and deformed wing surface are shared by two solvers within each time step. A remeshing method bas...
